Instructor Development and CPD

‘Functional skills are the fundamental, applied skills in English, mathematics, and information and communication technology (ICT) which help people to gain the most from life, learning and work’. (Ofqual 2012)

This training is provided through us by The Training Alliance. The Functional Skills element of the training is submitted for certification by Boston College. Following the completion of Functional Skills at either Level 1 or Level 2, an Added Value Course will be provided as either a Fleet qualification or an Assessing Vocational Achievement qualification. All costs for both the Functional Skills and Added Value Courses are met through Government funding, however you are required to invest your time and commitment.

To enrol onto the Functional Skills element of the training, you must be able to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You do not hold a GCSE qualification in English or Mathematics at grade A* - C
  • You do not hold a Functional Skills qualification in English or Mathematics any higher than Level 1 

The above information is subject to a self-declaration and no other qualifications regardless of subject or level are taken into account.

  • You have lived in the UK for a minimum of 3 years 

Evidence of residency may be requested by Boston College or the awarding body.


The Functional Skills element of the training must be completed within a 12-week period from the date of registration on Day 1. 


This will be delivered in a group setting over four days with a period of approximately 3 to 4 weeks between each day. 


Attendance is required at all 4 days. 

Day 1 

Induction & Registration (4-6 Hours) 

Initial Screening Communication Skills & Body Language · Diagnostic Tests emailed from The Training Alliance · Workbooks emailed from The Training Alliance · Any work set to be returned before Day 2

Day 2 

Planning & Preparation Skills, Formal & Informal Language (4-6 Hours) 

Writing Paper Preparation · Email support from The Training Alliance · Any work set to be returned before Day 3

Day 3 

Mathematics Preparation (4-6 Hours) 

Observation of Informal & Formal Discussions Observations of Presentations (Level 2 Candidates) · Complete Practice Papers · Any work set to be returned before Day 4

Day 4 

Functional Skills Examinations (4-6 Hours) 

Reading, Writing & Mathematics · Resits To be taken if required

Functional Skills Certificates Awarded & Issued  

ADDED VALUE TRAINING

Fleet Qualification

Training Session 1 Full Day Assessment 

(Upon qualification – conversion to DVSA Fleet Badge subject to the standard DVSA fee)

OR

  • Assessors Qualification

Two ‘Safe Driving’ Candidates Required

10 - 12 Hours  (sessional)

Sessions with Candidates & Assessor

(2 x Registration of ‘Safe Driving’ Candidates – approx. £40 per candidate)
